Keep Columbia Safe formed after a particularly brutal attack downtown in June was captured by a city-owned video surveillance system.

The Attack:

On June 6, 2009, Columbia resident Adam Taylor was brutally attacked and beaten in a downtown parking garage by a group of seven teenagers. The attack was captured by a city-owned video surveillance system installed in the garage. Within six hours of seeing the video, police had arrested three of the attackers. Two more have turned themselves in.

Background:

In April of this year, the Columbia City Council voted to remove mobile video cameras from downtown. At the July 20 city council meeting, Adam and his family made a formal request that the council hear public comment at a future meeting and reconsider the camera proposal. The council voted 3-4 to deny their request. To view video of the Taylors' request for reconsideration, click here.
